WHEREAS the Province implemented container beverage deposits in 1994 to encourage residents to return bottles and cans to recycling depots with a fee of 5 cents for one litre or less for non-alcoholic beverages, 10 cents for one litre or less for alcoholic beverages and more than 1 litre for any beverages 20 cents;
AND WHEREAS the deposit amount has not changed since its implementation and the amount charged does not entice people to recycle bottles and cans and results in more and more of these containers ending up in landfills throughout BC:
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that NCLGA and UBCM request the Province of BC to encourage more people to recycle by implementing an increase in the bottle and can deposits to:
• 10 cents for one litre or less for non-alcoholic beverages
• 20 cents for one litre or less for alcoholic beverages
• 40 cents for any beverage in a container larger than one litre.
