Creation of a Recycling Corporation

Defeated by the NCLGA Membership

WHEREAS the Provincial Government has promoted the ideals of environmental sustainability through recycling to local governments;

AND WHEREAS in many smaller communities, adequate recycling facilities do not exist, causing many recyclable items to be placed in landfills:

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that NCLGA and UBCM lobby senior levels of government to take one or the other of the following two courses of action:

1.            Create a recycling corporation, funded through environmental fees that are levied at time of product purchase, which would provide a depot in every city to drop off any recyclable item, which cannot be processed locally, and provide transport for these items to a facility, where those items can be recycled properly, or;

2.            Senior levels of government issue a private sector call for proposals to manage recycling in all communities and that said RFP embody the concept of utilizing all accumulated, current, and future environmental levies as part of its structure.
