Defeated by the NCLGA Membership
WHEREAS commercial vehicles and their freight arriving in both BC and Canada are major contributors to the introduction of invasive alien species of flora, fauna, and insects, which can have devastating environmental and financial impacts;
AND WHEREAS the financial cost to mitigate and eradicate these alien species is borne by governments across the country (including in some cases, local government):
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the NCLGA and UBCM lobby the Provincial and Federal Governments to create a strategy for charging an environmental levy on all incoming commercial vehicles and their freight via land, air, and/or water, to be collected and utilized for the purpose of mitigating and eradicating environmental damage caused by alien flora, fauna, and insects.
The UBCM membership has not previously considered any resolutions calling for an environmental levy on all incoming commercial vehicles to help mitigate and eradicate environmental damage caused by alien flora, fauna and insects.
However, the membership has called for dedicated resources to government agencies for control of invasive species as well as a provincial grants program to assist local organizations in invasive species control (2010-B29).
