E3. Equitable Stumpage Rates to Support Local Economies

Year: 2024
Sponsors: NCLGA Executive
NCLGA Ref#: E3
UBCM Ref#: NR95

Status

Endorsed by the NCLGA and UBCM Memberships | Referred to UBCM Executive

WHEREAS stumpage rates play a significant role in shaping the dynamics of the timber industry and local economies; and

WHEREAS while increases in stumpage rates may generate additional revenue for the Provincial Government, there is a risk of unintended consequences, including economic hardship and reduced revenue for local businesses and governments;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the NCLGA and UBCM advocate to the provincial government for equitable stumpage rates that balance the need for Provincial Government revenue generation with the economic sustainability of forestry-dependent communities.

Actions

Advocacy and Follow-Up on NCLGA and UBCM Endorsed Resolutions

Once a resolution passed by the North Central Local Government Association (NCLGA) is subsequently endorsed at the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) Annual Convention, responsibility for advancing that resolution transitions to UBCM. UBCM leads the advocacy efforts with the Provincial Government and is the primary point of contact for updates on the status of endorsed resolutions.

To track the progress and government responses to endorsed resolutions, members are encouraged to consult the Provincial Government Response to Resolutions Report, which is published by UBCM annually in February. This report outlines the actions taken or commitments made by the Province in response to each resolution endorsed by UBCM.
